In this note, we will consider existing applications that allow you to really mine on smartphones, i.e. actually participate in the creation of a new block.

Proof-of-Work (PoW) Systems

Most “live” projects are based on generally accepted PoW systems, which are aimed at using the computing power of the device in order to receive an award. This subsection lists existing PoW systems available on smartphones.

- MIBCoin

The very first system is the Mobile Integted Blockchain (MIB). The main MIB network was launched on November 12, 2018, and in just two weeks, it reached more than a thousand active users. A year after the release, the number of active users almost reached two thousand.

MIB is positioned as an environmentally friendly and inexpensive PoW mining for mobile devices, which is built on Bitcoin. The main difference from Bitcoin is that the Mobile Proof-of-Work (MPoW) protocol used by the MIB project uses the resources of the mobile device processor to mine new blocks. The application is designed taking into account the limitations of the device, and users can choose their desired mining complexity. This is done to protect the smartphone from overheating, however, even when installing medium complexity, the devices heat up significantly.

Be that as it may, low-cost devices with any processing power got the opportunity to be part of the MIB. MIB developers claim that the smartphone application consumes 150 times less energy than mining on ASIC.

It is also important to note that the MIB cannot work in the background, which makes daily use of the smartphone inconvenient. The need to constantly keep the MIB application active in reality makes it possible to use it only for redundant devices or on specially designed farms. This makes the MIB expensive not only in terms of hardware, but also in terms of real power consumption.

- uPlexa

The main goal of the second uPlexa system is to create an Internet of Things device platform to provide an anonymous blockchain-based payment system. A beta version of the system was released in 2018. At the beginning of 2019, the uPlexa team developed a public Android application. At the moment, users can also use it on their personal computers, Android devices, AMD GPUs and Nvidia. uPlexa is also built on PoW, i.e. the resources of the processor or the graphics card of the devices are used to add transaction records to the blockchain.

uPlexa aims to overcome the well-known problems of Bitcoin - slow transaction times and huge commissions. These problems are solved by introducing a new model in which commissions for micropayments increase with network congestion. This method helps to reduce the number of micropayment transactions and, consequently, reduce the load on the network.

The project allows you to work with various types of equipment, including telephones, tablets, personal computers, televisions, set-top boxes, and even Raspberry Pi. In the short term, the team plans to expand the list, supporting as many Internet of Things devices as possible, but in every way confronting farms. Because devices vary widely, uPlexa offers a flexible choice between different settings according to the resources of each type of device. In this way, users can adjust the CPU load as well as the number of threads to prevent overuse and overheating.

Proof-of-Transaction (PoT) System - TAU Coin

Blockchain applications for smartphones can rely not only on computing resources, but also on participation in ensuring the sending of transactions between other network nodes. Thus, devices compete in the accumulation of transactions to generate new blocks and receive transaction fees. The TAU Coin Android application was released in May 2019, and its first users have been active since 2018. Currently, more than four hundred thousand registered and 1,500 active members of the TAU Coin system are registered.

The Proof-of-Transaction algorithm developed in the project determines a new block generation address based on the accumulated transaction history. For each address, there is a linear relationship between the probability of generating a new block and its history. This dependency is called mining power and is similar to the Bitcoin system. The more transactions the user has completed, the higher the likelihood of receiving a reward in the form of a transaction fee. The algorithm encourages users to actively make transactions and thereby increase the turnover of coins.

Unlike other projects that use the PoW algorithm, in TAU, the entire supply of coins is already pre-generated in the Genesis block. This was done in order to combat the paradigm of savings for the subsequent gain from the sale, which prevails in the cryptocurrency market. The platform encourages active members of the network who make transactions, and thus turnover is also stimulated.

It should be noted that TAU has security measures against a majority attack. An attacker will need to make more transactions than other network members during the year, which makes the attack very difficult to implement.

Cloud mining

Cloud Mining is a process of mining tokens using a remote server. This is the concept used in the Electroneum and Phoneum projects. Cloud Mining is free and allows users to participate regardless of their hardware, knowledge of cryptocurrency economics and mining algorithms.

- Electroneum

Electroneum is one of the most popular mobile mining projects.

After the start of development in 2017, Electroneum carried out a brilliant sale of ICOs. By the beginning of 2018, a beta version of the Android application was launched. By the 3rd quarter of 2018, the project reached two million registered users, and at the moment their number has exceeded three million, as well as two hundred thousand active miners.

Electroneum is compatible with the Know Your Customer (KYC) procedure. The platform requires users to provide their official name and surname, country, phone number and upload a photo. This is done to verify identity and minimize the risk of illegal use of the application. Unfortunately, this information can be officially transferred to third parties in accordance with the project’s privacy policy.

- Phoneum

Phoneum is another project that uses Cloud Mining. After nearly two years of development, the Phoneum Mining app and gaming platform were released in May 2019.

The project is designed to work on different systems and was implemented in a gaming environment called Crypto Treasures, where users can earn Phoneum tokens in online games. It is expected that the project will have an easily integrated API that will allow other developers to use cryptocurrency in their projects.

Phoneum’s Cloud Mining is activated through its own application without any preconditions and requires reactivation every week. Rewards are distributed free of charge after the start of mining. Smartphones, however, do not perform any actions and do not help confirm new blocks, and as a result they do not carry a utilitarian function in the blockchain. Since cloud mining applications and services are free and do not require an initial investment, this makes it easy to receive rewards and, ultimately, reduces the value of the token.

Based on an analysis of existing projects, we found that their systems either use computationally heavy algorithms or do not participate in building blocks at all.

Proof — of — Activity System

The latest Enecuum system is based on the Proof-of-Activity concept. In this system, smartphones participate in adding a block to the blockchain and do not solve a difficult mathematical problem. The effect on the device’s battery is much lower than in PoW systems (<5%), and user engagement is ensured through a referral program.

The project began in 2017, and in the second quarter of 2019, an application for mining on Android was released. In the PoA algorithm, which is mining in the application, instead of solving complex tasks, mobile devices validate blocks, consuming a minimum of battery power, which prevents overheating of the device. This application is part of the implementation of the developed Trinity protocol - a combination of PoW, PoS, and PoA algorithms. In addition to the released application, PoW and PoS algorithms are under development, but they are already open for testing.

At the moment, the project is in the final version of open testing and already has more than 1800 active nodes.

A brief summary. At the moment, there are various approaches to mining on phones. Some consume massive amounts of battery power (PoW), while others transfer computing to the cloud (Cloud Mining). Obviously, the main prospect for the development of real mobile mining lies in the PoA concept, which does not have a significant effect on the battery, and also does not perform all the calculations on the user's personal device, but on a third-party server.
