Between 1590 and 1610, Bรกthory and four associates were accused of torturing and killing hundreds of girls and women. The largest number of victims mentioned during Bรกthory's trial was 650, however this figure derives from a servant girl named Susannah's assertion that Bรกthory's court official, Jakab Szilvรกssy, had seen the figure in one of Bรกthory's secret books. Szilvรกssy never referenced the book in his evidence, and it was never revealed. Despite the evidence against her, Bรกthory was spared the death penalty because of the importance of her family. |Credits to Wikipedia|
