The Stanford prison experiment and Little Albertβs study are two of the most disturbing psychological experiments conducted to date. Little Albert was forced to develop a fear of furry toys, and he was never made to unlearn this conditioning. It is believed that due to this, he only lived till the age of 6. While in the Stanford Prison Experiment, βnormalβ college students were put in detention centers, with half of them given prisonersβ roles and the other half made guards. It was soon seen that the guards started severely abusing the prisoners. The experiment was called off six days later, and it was concluded that power and authority could make even a βnormalβ person dangerous. However, some psychologists argue that the behavior was not due to power and lack of it, but due to the human instinct to follow orders. The students were merely trying to act the roles they had been assigned.
