How to Scan QR Codes SAFELY

People often warn you about QR Codes. People are correct in warning you about QR codes. QR Codes may contain malicious web links. It is the same vulnerability as the URL shorteners. You can't be sure what URL you will open! You must NOT open a QR Code on the fly. One must not open a QR Code directly from the scanner application, i.e., on the fly. Instead, one must use a QR Code reader program to decode the embedded URL. Check whether the embedded URL directs you to the correct and authentic site. It may also happen that the QR Code contains a shortened URL! People must know what website they are opening before actually opening it! I use QR Code scanners that don't open the URL on the fly. Generally, I save the QR Code image and scan it on my GNU/Linux computer. I never hurry to open the URL directly from a QR code image. If your computer/laptop or smartphone doesn't have a QR Code scanner that allows you to view the URL before opening it, then you are using a rather UNSMART app!
