Brainwash

The brain is an organ of advanced animals.

Do we discuss ants' or mosquitoes' brains? No, we don't say anything about the brains of tiny animals. One of my friends who work in an IBM lab simulated a mouse brain with a set of programs.

Human brains are bigger and more complicated. Researchers have been putting efforts to understand the functioning. Although scientists have made decent progress in artificial intelligence, computers are still not able to mimic a human brain of a few months old babies.

  • It is still a wonder how human brains perform complex tasks such as personal identification by visual processing or analyzing vocal signals (in the case of the visually handicapped).

  • Humans can even recognize a particular human by touching the skin. Remember the last scenes of Charlie Chaplin's movie "City Lights" where the heroine recognized the tramp not by seeing but touching his palms!

Brain memory can store colossal information

  • How do we remember a past event? How is the task of personal identification or recognition accomplished? That means a huge memory bank inside the human brain can record and store information.

Writing and storing information inside the brain is not similar to writing down a sentence on a piece of paper. It is not fully understood how human brains record and store information. But, it is true that a human brain can store huge information.

When we write anything, we prefer to write specific types of information on particular pieces of paper, i.e., use separate notebooks for the different subjects.

The calling back of different pieces of information from the brain memory can be accomplished in parallel. In case of finding specific information, one has to read it from a specific notebook, and hence it can't be processed in parallel.

Can we wash selected memories from animal brains?

We can easily erase information from a notebook by using a vanishing chemical. If the chemical can't erase, we can tear off particular pages from a notebook. We can even throw away or destroy documents, notebooks, or books.

  • Can we forget a bad incident that happened in our lives? It is not possible to erase information from animal brains. We can delete selected pieces of information from the computer's hard disk. But, we can NOT erase or remove anything from the brain's memory.

If we could erase selected parts of human memory, there could have been no trauma from past experiences. Then, a psychiatrist would have erased the unwanted disturbing information from a patient's brain memory. But, it is impossible to delete anything from the brain's memory.

Brainwashing is a different task altogether

  • Brainwashing refers to a different meaning than erasing any information from the brain. Brainwashing is an idiomatic expression meaning influencing a person on a specific subject.

  • Fearmongering someone for a particular subject is an example of brainwashing. Sometimes, parents or elderly relatives fearmonger a child about something for a specific purpose. Suppose a mother doesn't want her child to go out of the house at night. The child's mother might fearmonger the child about something, such as ghosts, so the child doesn't go out at night.

During the last two-plus years the governments and the mainstream news media made propaganda about a new dreaded virus to fearmonger the global citizens so that they don't break the governmental restrictions. This is also an example of brainwashing.

Brainwashing is probably a political agenda

Every political party in the world wants to influence the citizens' minds. They want to influence the people so that they believe their words. The political parties always try their best to brainwash the voters to cast votes in their favor.

Big political parties pay the mainstream news media to play the role of "brainwashers" for influencing the voters in favor of them. The mainstream news media propagate narratives created by their supporter political parties.

  • As the science of brain signal sensing improves, non-invasive manipulation (brainwashing) of brain stimuli is not far away. Researchers are probably experimenting with the brains of mice and many other animals.

A Satyajit Ray movie ("Hirak Rajar Deshe" or The Kingdom of Diamonds, 1980) showed how a selfish king forced a scientist to invent the devil machine to brainwash [মগজ ধোলাই, Magoj (brain) Dholai (wash)] the poor citizens.

Video clip: A scene from the movie "Hirak Rajar Deshe" or "The Kingdom of Diamonds," which you may watch with English subtitles on other sites.

Closing remarks

Brainwashing is a subject of much interest to the researchers of applied psychology and neuroscientific computing.

We can't assume that brainwashing in a literal sense will always be impossible.

If somehow, any researcher, a government, or a company can carry out brainwashing in the real sense, the world may get a paradigm shift towards autocratic control of the citizens.

Thanks for recognizing this very point - brainwashing is the most powerful tool the politicians utilize before every election.

Yes unfortunately they're very successful, and people follow all they say as the unique truth... not only before election but nowadays every day for anything they want.

And many celebrities from the entertainment, film, music, and literature fields world also join in supporting/endorsing the brainwashing acts of the politicians.

Ah that's true, these "celebrities" choose money instead of ethics.

True. In every country, celebrities shamelessly choose money and not ethics.

We cannot really fathom how much complex our brain is. It is still a wonder that we have to explore.
