Sore Throat Home Remedy Most sore throats are harmless and go away on their own within 5 to 7 days. Try the following: 1. Double the intake of fluids such as water, juice, tea and warm broth. This will help keep the sputum thin and easy to pass. Avoid coffee and alcohol. 2. Gargle with salt water. Mix half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and rinse. This will help soothe the throat and remove phlegm. 3. Try lozenges or candy for sore throat. 4. Rest the voice. If a sore throat has affected your speech it can lead to irritation and temporary loss of voice. 5. Adding moisture to the air will help keep the sinus and mucous membranes moist. There is a humidifier that can be purchased or steam inhalation is also available. 6. Avoid smoke and pollution. Smoke irritates the sore throat. Also stop smoking. To prevent sore throat: 1. Wash your hands often or use alcohol hand sanitizer if you have a cold and flu. 2. Avoid touching the nose and mouth to avoid getting germs. Consult a doctor immediately if: 1.
