Why Russia invaded Ukraine?

After Russia was wary of the Ukraine crisis, which has been tense for days, Putin ordered military action. Russian forces are advancing rapidly on Ukrainian territory. Russia's objectives are being questioned as the consequences of the war continue around the world. So why is Russia at war with Ukraine? Why did Russia invade Ukraine?

Many parts of Ukraine, particularly Kiev, have been targeted, but worldwide sanctions against Russia remain in place. Why Russia started this war is a question the world is asking.

Tensions between Ukraine and Russia extend to the Soviet Union. Long after the collapse of the USSR, Kiev and Moscow could not agree on the division of soviet heritage.

Anukovic's rise to power was provoked by Russian separatists, and the so-called Orange Revolution marked a turning point in relations between the two countries. Pro-Western candidate Viktor Yushchenko was elected president after protests openly supported by the European Union.

A similar street protest took place in 2013 during Viktor Yanukovich's pro-Russian rule. The protests began when Yanukovich refused to sign a unity agreement between Ukraine and the EU. Ukrainian politicians were forced to leave Ukraine. Ukraine's transition to the West was the beginning of tensions between Russia and the West, unlike during the Cold War. After Yanukovich came to power in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, the pro-Russian movement intensified in Ukraine.

In Crimea, pro-Russian militants occupied public buildings and parliament. Pressure from pro-Russian groups forced thousands of Crimean Tatars and Ukrainians to leave their homes. After a controversial referendum in Crimea, the Moscow government took action.

Shortly after the illegal annexation of Crimea, violent clashes broke out in Donbas, a pro-Russian majority in eastern Ukraine. Pro-Russian separatists have formed two so-called governments in the region. Thousands have been killed in clashes between Ukrainian troops and separatists. In this process, the most important steps towards peace were taken in the so-called Normandy-style negotiations between Germany, France, Ukraine and Russia.
