The Needle in the Dark In a forgotten village, shrouded in mist and whispered legends, lived a coven of witches. Their powers were strong, but their enemies were stronger. Desperate to defend themselves against a rising tide of hunters, they summoned a darkness that had long been buried—a familiar unlike any other. This familiar took the form of a tiny needle, no longer than a fingernail, yet it possessed the spirit of a ravenous predator. It was known as **Noceris**, and it thrived in shadows, blending seamlessly into the night. Its body shimmered with an iridescent hue, making it almost invisible to the naked eye. It could flit through the air with the silence of a whisper, a mere ghost in the dark. The witches imbued Noceris with a single purpose: to seek out and incapacitate their enemies. They whispered incantations under the flickering candlelight, binding their power to the creature. As the moon hung low in the sky, Noceris took flight, a harbinger of chaos and retribution. In the heart of the village, the hunters gathered, emboldened by tales of witchcraft. They spoke loudly of their bravery, unaware of the lurking menace. Noceris swooped among them, a shadow among shadows, unseen even by the keenest eyes. Its needle-like form darted into the folds of their clothing, slipping through cracks and crevices, leaving no trace of its presence. Each night, a hunter would fall, succumbing to an unseen affliction. At first, it was dismissed as illness—perhaps a fever, or the effects of a long winter. But soon, panic spread as more succumbed. Their bodies weakened, minds frayed, and whispers of witchcraft filled the air, echoing in the village square. Days turned to weeks, and the hunters, once fearless, now trembled at the thought of the dark. They began to see shadows where there were none, and the sound of the wind became a haunting chorus of their fears. Noceris thrived in this chaos, feeding on their despair, each sting a reminder of the witches’ wrath. But the witches, too, sensed the tide turning. The hunters grew desperate, turning their fury toward the very darkness that enveloped them. They began to set traps, searching for the invisible terror that plagued them. They armed themselves with lanterns filled with salt and iron, believing these would cleanse the darkness. On a night draped in heavy clouds, Noceris felt the shift in the air. It was no longer a predator but the hunted. As the hunters advanced with their lanterns, the familiar darted through the shadows, but it was not as agile as before. The light pierced the dark, revealing its shimmering form for a fleeting moment. One hunter, quick-witted and sharp-eyed, struck out with a vial of salt, capturing Noceris within. The familiar writhed, its essence battling against the binding forces of the salt. Yet, it was too late. The witches felt the severing of the bond, their power waning as Noceris was trapped. They gathered in a circle, chanting frantically, but their spells faltered. In the heart of the village, the hunters rejoiced, believing they had vanquished the witches’ greatest weapon. But as dawn broke, a cold wind swept through the village, carrying with it a chilling laugh. The witches’ magic had not been extinguished; it simply lay dormant, waiting for the right moment to strike again. Noceris, though captured, had sown seeds of fear that would linger long after its departure. And the witches, hidden in the shadows, watched and waited, knowing that the darkness would always return, and with it, the needle in the dark.
