Rodriguez was quiet for a long moment. Then he said, "Even if you're right—even if there's something down there—what do you expect me to do about it?" "Increase security protocols. If there is intelligence here, then our best chance of survival is to make contact, to demonstrate that we're not a threat." "The next return window is seven months away. We can't evacuate." "Then we sit tight, we maintain defensive postures, and we wait." Another tremor shook the habitat. Stronger than the previous ones. The lights flickered and stayed off for ten seconds this time before the backup systems engaged. "They're getting closer," Kane said. "Whatever they're doing, whatever this is, it's escalating." Rodriguez stood up. "All right. Here's what we're going to do. I'm implementing emergency protocols—no solo EVAs, all surface time requires authorization from me personally, continuous monitoring of seismic activity. Dr. Chen will conduct a full subsurface survey, proper equipment and safety protocols this time. If there are structures down there, we map them completely. And you, Dr. Kane, are going to work with Dr. Morrison to develop a psychological profile of what we might be dealing with." "A psychological profile? Commander, we don't even know what they are." "Then figure it out. You're the neuroscientist. You understand behavior, cognition, decision-making. If something is down there, if it's intelligent, then it has motivations we can potentially understand. And understanding is our best weapon." Kane nodded. "Yes, sir." He turned to leave, but Rodriguez stopped him. "Dr. Kane. One more thing." "Yes?" "You said these things, whatever they are, are observing us the way you observed your laboratory subjects. That they see us as specimens to be studied." "That's my hypothesis, yes." "So let me ask you something. In your laboratory, when you were done studying a specimen, when you'd gathered all the data you needed—what happened to the subject?" Kane felt ice form in his stomach. "They were euthanized," he said quietly. "For tissue analysis. To understand the full scope of the neural changes. They were euthanized, dissected, and catalogued." Rodriguez's expression was grim. No warning. No static. Just silence. He tapped his helmet, checking the communication system. All indicators showed green—the system was functioning perfectly. And yet, no sound. No background chatter from the station. No telemetry data from his suit to the habitat computers. Complete communication blackout. "Olympus Station, this is Kane. Radio check." Nothing. "Olympus, do you copy?" Silence. Kane looked back at the habitat, less than two hundred meters away. Double-time." Kane walked back, forcing himself not to run, forcing himself to maintain protocol. But his mind was racing. He'd spent his entire career as the apex predator. The one who decided. The one who chose which subjects lived and which died. The one who justified those choices with logic and rationality and the greater good. Now he understood what it felt like to be on the other side of that equation. To be the specimen. To be the subject. To be the thing that some greater intelligence had decided to study, to test, to understand. And maybe, when they were done gathering data, to dispose of. He reached the airlock, cycled through, stepped into the habitat. The crew was waiting—all of them, expressions ranging from concerned to terrified. "We're leaving," Rodriguez said. "I've sent an emergency signal to Earth. We're going to prep the ascent vehicle and return to the Hermes. We'll wait out the next seven months in orbit if we have to, but we're not staying here." He looked at his hands, remembering how steady they'd been as he'd held the scalpel, as he'd made the first cut, as he'd ignored the macaque's desperate reaching fingers. "It's the only thing that matters," he said. "It's the only thing that ever mattered. And I pray to God that they have it. Because if they're like me—if they see us the way I saw those animals—then we're already dead." The habitat trembled again. The lights flickered.
