I don't know about other people, but where I come from, you don't get to call a person older than you by his or her name especially if the person is not related to you. It's not that it's really a taboo to do so. No. But, I would say, it is the societal pressure that has made it in such a way. We do it mostly out of compulsion and not out of respect.
