If you really want to advance your status, your human development and overall life's perspectives, you can only get that by going through reading books a lot. Your success and emancipation determines the level of knowledge you acquire by reading great philosophical, economical and historical books. It doesn't really have to be what you learn from the university or college, but what you learn from reading. It will definitely shape you into a better and emotionally balanced human.
