Libyan Civil War - Why? Who?

Inspired by the 2011 events from Tunisia and Egypt, the revolution quickly spread into Libya where thousands of protesters, backed by foreign forces, managed to overthrow the long ruling dictator, colonel Muammar Gaddafi, who ruled Libya for almost 42 years.

Since then, the country is witnessing a bloody civil war mostly fought two main sides: the Government of National Accord (GNA) recognized by the international community and the Libyan National Army (LNA) led by the Field Marshal Khalifa Belqasim Haftar.

Each side is backed by many countries, the most prominent being France, Italy, the Russian Federation, Egypt, United Arab Emirates and the U.S.

In the last couple of years, Haftar managed to conquer most of the Libyan territory reaching the outskirts of the capital Tripoli. But, in the last couple of months his forces suffered significant territorial and military loses.

At this stage of the conflict, I would say that up until recently, the conflict was in way predictable. GNA was weak, while LNA was more determined and well-equipped. The last five months proved that money, military equipment and other material help is not enough to accomplish your mission, as long as the international community did not approve your doings.

Moreover, one with the direct involvement of other countries, the conflict is way too far from ending. The most relevant example is the recent dispute between Turkey and Egypt. Egypt supports Hatftar, while Turkey GNA. I would say that for Egypt is important to secure its Libyan border and maybe that is why the Egyptian Parliament approved direct military intervention in Libya. Turkey, on the other side, tries to counterbalance the Egyptian influence.

The U.S. authorities recently stated the Libyan conflict is way from over and what is happening on the Libyan territory is troubling for the entire region. Of curse, the U.S. have their interests in the region. Many would say oil and many others agree. We will see.

The conflict is more complex to be explained in a few words so I would make this my mission, to write and to do what I do best: unbiased political analyses.

One of the best maps to see what is happening in Libya is https://libya.liveuamap.com/ .

I am afraid if it comes to these minds of civil wars fought there's no way of doing good. Many countries suffer(ed) from dictators and what we see is once the dictator is gone the mess only gets bigger. Perhaps it is what the people did to themselves. If the world makes it only worse the best thing is we all stop interfering and let the people fight their own war. No matter how you put it most are not happy with the interference and they only complain about and hate the rest of the world more. Refugees included, most are not happy not grateful abroad and misbehave. Those who do stay in your country and fight for it like so many worldwide do. It's sad but this is the reality.
