When All Of This Gets Better

These past two years of pandemics just flew by me in an instant.

Lots of things happen while being stuck at home, both bad and good, though mostly bad.

As my final year in college has just started, I want to reminisce about the past three years I've spent as a college student. There are hilarious moments, fateful encounters, and beautiful memories I've gathered along the way that will stay with me my whole life.

University life is really full of stories, especially before the pandemic. From the beginning of student orientation, the first introductions, making a lot of new friends, meeting crazy seniors and professors, even the crazy deadlines for tasks and exams. There's so much to tell about so I'll just share them one at a time if you're interested in it.

I really miss the days when me and my friends would walk almost one kilometer every lunch break just to eat at our favorite soup stall near that badminton court. Sharing daily struggles, discussing the class before, or even just enjoying the short break before class starts resuming.

Or when we'd run from the entrance to the class almost every morning after doing all the projects and homework until dawn. Like that one time, we sneaked up to join the class when the professor is too focused on writing on the board and not realizing that we've just arrived because we didn't bring anything to class (not even a pen).

Life was so much more entertaining back then.

I remember the days as freshmen when we have open house days for extracurricular clubs, and each of us got crowded by all the seniors trying to make us join their clubs. Or when we'd have that annual event for celebrating newcomers to the campus and we'd have parties all around the place. They were such a blast and we'd go home all exhausted without even thinking of the morning class the day after.

I also remember the days as sophomores, when we have to sell a box full of croquettes as fundraisers for events organized by the Student Associations. And if we can't sell the daily quotas, most of us will just buy the croquettes for ourselves and eat until we're sick of them. Or that time when we're accepted as a part of the Student Association and finally allowed to set foot in the Student Association Headquarters (SAHQ). That first time playing table tennis against the seniors and lost by a huge margin, or that time we spent the whole day just playing cards in the SAHQ. Ah, I really miss the campus and everything inside of it.

It's really amazing how little moments like this can mean so much to me, more so knowing that I probably can't do them ever again, seeing the current numbers still going up despite all the vaccines being distributed.

My third year as a college student was not as interesting as the first two, the main reason being we are learning from home. That being said, some bloopers and incidents did happen during virtual classes and exams, which I plan on sharing some time soon, but not on this occasion.

One of the saddest parts of being in this situation is seeing the seniors graduating online. All the sweat, tears, and fun we've had in offline celebrations simply can't be reproduced virtually.

I remember seeing all the seniors crying their hearts out and hugging each other during the offline celebrations, probably saying their goodbyes and gratitude for all the memories they've created together on campus. Whereas now, they can only say their goodbyes virtually and reminisce about the past four years via zoom call.

To add context to this, my campus is filled with students from all around the country, with some living in outer islands and on the far end of the country, thus it is possible that these guys might not see each other for a long time after graduating.

That being said, students in my year have spent half of their college life virtually and will probably have their graduation celebrations online as well :(.

It's crazy when you think about it.

In a few years, there will be some generation of students who going to spend their entire college life virtually. They won't know the good spots to hang out on campus, they won't experience all the scary and crazy stuff happening on campus at night, and they might never meet their classmates during the whole four years of college life.

Thinking about it just makes me really sad. Even just two years of online college has made me lost a lot of good experiences and moments. Not just the ones with friends, but also the ones with professors, teaching staff, and lab engineers.

Let me tell you this: Doing concrete and pavement laboratory experiments virtually is not a fun experience, not even a useful one. You simply can't reproduce the same results of some things virtually. No matter how hard the lab engineers try to make us understand, we feel like it's no different than watching youtube videos.

There's so much more I want to share and rant about this whole online college experience but let's save it for a later date, or else I might make a whole book out of this.

In the end, while it's true that working or learning from home is not enjoyable for most of us, we can always try to look at the bright side of things no matter how small it is compared to the negativity around them. These past two years, I learned to not take anything for granted and to be grateful for everything that has happened.

I'm also looking forward to the day I graduate from college and embark on the next chapter of my life. But for now, all I can do is plan my next steps and do my best so I can finally enjoy the moment when all this gets better.

Mis college years are far behind a long time ago. But I remember it as one of the best times of my life. It is sad what has happened with the pandemic and the need for online classes.

We were happy and didn't know it. I also miss the friendships I made at school. I was able to live unique experiences with them and I counted on them when I needed to let off steam. The best moments were when I lived with them without making plans beforehand.

For now, what matters is that we are all safe. We will just stay indoors. We need to save ourselves so that when this ended we will reunite once again.
