Please Hold On For Just A Bit Longer

They're slowly breaking down, part by part. Nothing I did can help them go back to the way they are before.

One has been losing its arm and now its feet, while the other is suffering from complications of diseases. They have been with me for quite some time now, about three years to be exact. And in those times, I will admit that I haven't been the best companion for them, even though they did their best to comply with my needs.

I cleaned them every once in a while but the stains of war and chaos are still there for everyone to see. They don't seem to have much time left in their lives but these upcoming days are very crucial and I need them to be here so that I can keep on going. I'm so close to reaching the goal and I don't think I can do it without their help.

Their predecessors have also been a huge part of my life. Ever since I was a kid, I don't think there has been a moment that they are not beside me. Especially after that incident where I almost lose one of my senses, it has been the one that made it possible for me to continue living the way I was before. I used to really hate it back then because people used to mock others who needs it, but I realize that I should've been grateful that it exists and I have the privilege to use it in my life. It has so many other uses besides the original purpose behind its creation and I can see it now.

As for the other one, it has been a huge part of me growing up. It allows me to learn more about the world, improve my skills, have some fun, and gain new friends to mention a few of its contributions to my life. From what used to be a snobby brat who couldn't care less about it and never take care of it properly, I now know the true value of it and how I won't be able to keep up with others without it.

I feel really bad about how I treated them these past three years, to be honest. I'm never the type to abandon my belongings but one thing leads to another and some things just got out of control. Before this current situation, I use them much less often compared to nowadays, and you can say that I might even overwork them lately. From the moment that I wake up until I go to sleep, they get little to no rest but even if that's not really how I wanted the situation to be.

There have been quite a few signs showing that they are beginning to crumble and I'm starting to lose hope. I don't know what I can do if they really quit on me now. Things will really get out of hand and I'll be left watching the dust. Replacement is actually the best solution, but as we all know, money is quite hard to get lately with the restrictions and stuff all around the country. The best scenario for me is for them to hold on until I graduate and the crypto and stock market to be bullish until then.

If you're confused about what I'm talking about in this article, the two companions that I've mentioned are my Specs/Glasses and Laptop. I'm really dependent on these two items for almost everything nowadays.

Classes are still held online, and all of the assignments and projects must be done using the laptop. Not to mention writing and other kinds of entertainment I have are only possible because of it. As for the glasses/specs, I can't really see well without them because I have astigmatism and a bit of myopia in both of my eyes. Life before glasses is truly a bliss but we learn to live with what we have, in my case a life with eyes that need constant support.

My glasses have snapped in half about a year ago and I tried my best to stick the parts together using glue. It still worked out to this date, but this morning, the handle on the left side also snapped. Since then, I have tried to not use it unless really necessary and it really sucks. I can't really look at texts and numbers clearly and tried my best not to squint my eyes as I hear that it will only make the condition worse.

As for my laptop, it has been plugged into the socket for almost 18 hours every day. It won't survive more than 10 minutes with only the battery. What's worse is that I feel that it's been heating up lately even without me using any kind of power-consuming software like AutoCAD, ETABS, Photoshop, and their kinds. Most of my weekly assignments only require basic MS Office, Zoom, Teams, or university internal learning websites, but I'm worried that it will stop working anytime soon.

I still have a little bit of savings to buy new glasses, but it is not enough to buy a laptop that fulfills the requirement for my college major (most of the good ones are priced at more than ~US $1200). Not to mention the need of emergency funds in unpredictable times like this, which make me think twice before spending any big chunks of my savings.

My current savings situation :))) Credits to me

The only thing I can do now is to hope that they can hold on until graduation and that everything will work out until then. Shoutout to any fellow college students in their final year. I hope that we will survive through all the hard times and soon prevail as people who are ready to contribute more to society. Good luck to all of us!

As I said before, the schedule for the next few weeks is nothing short of chaotic. Assignments, group projects, presentations, reports, and exams are packed up closely, not to mention tutoring, lecture video-editing, and checking underclassmen's work to boot. Those are just the academic responsibility and truth be told there are still a lot of things that I need to do in my not so free time.

Without these two loyal companions, I'm 100% sure that I won't survive that schedule. You can say that it's already a miracle how I manage to write this article if you see the state of them.

Just a little bit more push and you'll get there. I hope all things will work out for you.

I read every single sentence trying to figure out what the item was, and when you pointed it out, I had to go back and check it again. I can relate to everything you are currently facing, maybe except the glasses, I have only started using glasses myself and I know how difficult it can be when you go a day without them. The real challenge was during the examination period. I also know how it feels to use a laptop with weak batteries. I hope you can change it soon before the overheating damages the hard drive. Good luck in your preparation for the exams and projects coming up. I have only just survived one too...haha...you will come out successfully, I know it.

Thanks for the kind wishes and words. A few days without functioning glasses can be really challenging indeed, not to mention the faulty laptop!
