No, no, no. I'm not talking about medical masks or face masks because I am not a medical professional who is competent enough to talk about it, and I think most people here is an adult who can decide what's best for themselves.
I am not talking about superhero or monster masks that you would wear on Halloween either.
Instead, I'm talking about the emotional mask that people may consciously or unconsciously wear in their everyday life.

The reasons people use these masks can also differ greatly. Some may wear them to blend in with others, avoid rejection, or appear different from the rest of their surroundings. Some might be born in a specific living condition where they can't express their emotions in order to survive, and others may wear them to hide their fear, anger, sadness, anxiety, depression, and vulnerability.
Sometimes, we can wear these masks for so long in order to fulfill the expectations of others and starts forgetting about who we really are. We start living as different people in different situations. A popular quote on the internet sounds like this:

We should remember that every individual is unique and special in their own way. And by wearing these masks, we may throw away an important part of ourselves that others don't find appealing and try to shape ourselves to their desires when in reality, doing so will leave us broken and sometimes unfixable.
We can stop hurting ourselves by peeling those masks off. Trying to be someone we're not is exhausting and harmful in the long run. We will start losing ourselves and be left with nothing but an empty shell if we keep putting on one mask after another to comply with the ever-changing expectations of society.
We can have better control of our lives. While wearing a mask, we often crack under social pressures and blindly follow what others are saying. We also have inner conflicts with ourselves as our actions may contradict our true beliefs. By taking the mask off, we can make better decisions, ones that truly align with our beliefs and ones that can truly benefit our lives.
We can find out who truly cares about us. While wearing our masks, we may encounter a lot of people who act nicely and try to befriend us. But the moment we take it off, most, if not all of them will leave us behind as we no longer fit in their agendas. If we start finding people who still want to be with us in our truest self, the chance is that they're genuine and they are there to stay.
With that said, you should never be afraid to be yourself and you should start peeling off the masks you've been wearing all this time. Don't let others judge you and shape your life and decisions based on their ideals. Stand up for yourself and what you believe in. Let's erase the fakeness around the world and live genuinely.
