Be careful who you are surrounding yourself with because they might just be the reason for your downfall.

In the entirety of human life, one will have encounters that may change their life for the better or for worse. It might be a brief conversation, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, or recurring meetups due to circumstances. And all of these small encounters will slowly pile up as life experiences and become a foundation for what one will be in the future.

And along the life journey, one of the most crucial parts is childhood, when one couldn't really differentiate between what is right and what is wrong and is still learning to adjust with the growing mind and body. For some, growing up can be the most defining path of their life, especially if they get acquainted with someone or something bad which led to them making some bad decisions early on in their life. It makes a good narrative that childhood and adolescence are truly the time when one needs to get surrounded by a positive and supportive environment.

A fresh mold ready to be shaped

A child's mind could be illustrated as a fresh mold, still untainted by the darkness of the world, and it needs proper care and handling before it can become a beautiful work of art. They will watch and learn how to think and act from their surroundings, with parents being the main focus on the earliest stage. This leads to a common occurrence where people will judge parents based on how their children behave in a public space.

Let's use an example to illustrate it better. When you see a child crying in the supermarket because their parents aren't giving them what they wanted and won't stop even after their parents rejected several times, one can assume that sometime in the past, the parents gave up and bought whatever it is that the child is crying about and in a way enabling the children to get away with it. This might create a way of thinking for the child in which crying can solve their problems and will grant them their wishes.

And while I don’t agree to judge how a parent teaches their child as different households have different rules, I think it’s a fair point to discuss how lenient or strict a parent should be to not enable spoiled and ungrateful behavior in a child.

Getting back to the main point, the moment a child enters a school and starts to blend in with their peers, it can be said that they’d spend more of their time with outside influence compared to their home influence. This is even more certain in the case that the child has extracurricular activities or extra classes after school. What this means is without a solid foundation built from a younger age, their character and personality might be twisted because of their peers.

Setting up a suitable environment for good development

I’ve mentioned in my older articles how trying to befriend someone hasn’t been my strongest point since childhood, and for some children, it might be even harder. Kids can be scary and more often than not, they replicate what they see on a daily basis. So if they are living in a rough household, they might try to be hard on other kids and influence them negatively. I won’t fully blame the parent because I know that parenthood is tough, and every people has their own burden that they carry silently.

However, as adults, we can’t just tolerate bad behaviors from children. It’s better to take care of the problem before it gets uncontrollable and wreaks havoc. If you think it’s not your place to teach other people’s children, at the very least you should teach your own kin how to behave and treat others. And if you feel that your child is suddenly misbehaving, please do your best to find the root of the problem and guide them to the right path. If it’s because of the environment and their peer, do consider a change of location before it gets too late.

As the wise man used to say, a rotten apple spoils the whole barrel. If you put a drop of black ink in a cup of milk, it will get contaminated and become poisonous. The same can be said about a child's mind. If it gets polluted with bad things and actions, it can grow into bad habits and addictions. So while they are still developing and learning more about the world and human behaviors, it’s better to pay attention to their surroundings and make sure that it is suitable for the positive development of your child.

The urge to make this article came after I remembered a time during my childhood when my school was filled with bullies and obnoxious children. Some kids were forced to move schools because of a problem and it's a bit crazy looking back now.

My dear friend, you said very well, parents and the type of upbringing, family atmosphere, and the importance they give to their children is an important factor in shaping the child's personality. Not paying attention to the child's upbringing can have devastating effects on the child's personality and his future...
