My journey as a Doctor from Italy to Germany Hello everybody, I decided to start to document slowly my progresses in this journey of mine that I started in January 2022. As the title says, I graduated medicine in June 2021 and decided to move to Germany at the end of the year to continue further with my education. I only had a A1 level at the time, so most of my time was and is spent still learning the language. I have wanted to start writing about my journey for a while now, but I couldn't find the right format. I find this platform perfect for me, anonymous enough, giving me the opportunity to go over some of the decisions I made during this period and that I will make, in order not to make the same mistakes twice. I always thought writing down your thoughts was a waste of time, being alone with my thoughts makes me kind of nervous, but out of necessity I had to learn (and am still learning) how to live with myself and how to try to face head on those that are my fears along the way. As I said at the beginning, I moved to Germany, Kiel in particular, a city in Northern Germany facing the Northern See. It has a beautiful atmosphere, with lots of tourists especially now in summer, not too big so that I learned my way around most of the places already. When I moved here back in January the situation was much different: there were almost no people walking outside due to the cold (-2/-3) for most of the day, most of the days), it was pretty impossible to meet new people or start new activities, in addition to all the difficulties of moving to a new city. I originally decided to move here for two reasons: in Kiel there is a really important University Clinic, in which I want to work during my specialization as a doctor, and my now ex-girlfriend lived in a city close to Kiel, but I will write about that maybe in another post. I had to re-evaluate a lot my objectives and my capabilities in this period, trying to understand if starting from scratch in another nation was really something that I wanted to do. You can imagine, no friends, no family, no ability to communicate with others in their own language, just thinking about it now I don't know what I had in mind honestly, when I decided to keep going with this journey when half of my reasons for being here disappeared in thin air. I think the realization that kept me going was that if I could do this, I could do basically anything else, I could move again just as easily if I wanted to and start from the beginning, having done it already once. This is definitely my biggest challenge, I thought, bigger than medical school honestly. I am far from the end of this challenge, but I'm way better off than I was at the beginning, having found my small niche in which I live right now: I do sports, I have a small group of Italian and German friends, I have more clarity regarding the bureaucratic steps I need to take in order to be able to start working here, I have found a Minijob to keep myself occupied, and so on. I will keep updating this thread periodically, whenever I have time, going in further details regarding this time that passed as well as talking about what I will be doing in these next periods. I hope some of you will gladly read about how my journey unfolds, hopefully culminating in me being able to land my dream job at the end of it. Have a nice evening D/C
