WHY do salmon spawn all at once, causing them to be highly vulnerable to predators? This strategy, on the contrary, protects against predators. In fact, with this breeding strategy for each individual salmon the probability of being eaten by a predator is minimal. No predator can eat more salmon than its stomach can hold. If salmon were to spawn evenly throughout the year, predators with abundant food could increase their numbers.
