WHY do hamsters devour their cubs? Numerous mammals eat the placenta coming from the fetus as well as their stillborn cubs. Doing so is essential to keep the den clean and to avoid attracting predators to it. And the nursing mother thus receives additional nutrients. But sometimes the program fails, and the female eats the live cubs. It happens mostly due to anxiety, when unfamiliar or dangerous creatures, sudden sounds or smells appear.
