WHY do flamingos stand on one leg? It turns out that standing on one leg is really related to the heat exchange: the ratio of uncovered feathers to the body is such that the bird loses too much heat in the wind. For this reason, flamingos warm their legs by alternately hiding them in their plumage. This pose requires no efforts from them: a special physiologic device prevents bending of the supporting leg, due to which it remains elongated even without using muscular force.
