SUMELA Monastery. Sümela Monastery, located in Maçka District of Trabzon, was built on a steep cliff on the slope of Karadağ in Altındere Valley. The monastery, which looks like it was built on the mountain, is breathtaking with the beauty of the nature it leans on. Her full name is Panagia Sumela (Mary of Sumela) or Theotokos Sumela, but she is also known as the Virgin Mary.
