King Alfred's Tower. In May 878, King Alfred the Great is said to have camped at Egbert's Stone, located near the tower. This location was believed to be where King Alfred gathered his armies to defeat the Danes at the Battle of Edington. The tower was also named Henry the Great in 1762. He was a wealthy banker and also an avid history lover and therefore was inspired to build his tower in honor of King Alfred. It was also to commemorate the end of the Seven Years' War against France. Architect Henry Flitcroft designed it and finally the 49 m tower was completed in 1772. Near Wiltshire, Somerset.England
