TODAY IN HISTORY On this day in AD 79, Mount Vesuvius erupted. Vesuvius' lava and hot ash rain destroyed the cities of Pompei and Herculeneum. These two cities, along with all the inhabitants, were destroyed in a short time under the hot lava.
