The “burgonet-steel helmet”, dated 1543, belonging to Filippo Negroli, the master of Renaissance metalwork, is enriched with motifs and reliefs inspired by classical art. A graceful mermaid or siren is depicted holding the head of the hard-eyed Medusa by her hair, on a bronze-looking and heavily curved helmet made of a single piece of steel. The sides of the helmet are covered with leaves of the acanthus plant, a common motif that adorns the Corinthian column heads, which is also seen in ancient Roman sculptures and wall paintings.
