It is located at the edge of a large molecular cloud in Unicorn, about 5,000 light-years away. The beautiful, symmetrical shape has been shaped by winds and radiation from the central hot young O-type star cluster. While the stars in the energetic cluster cataloged as NGC 2244 are only a few million years young, the central void in the Rosette Nebula is about 50 light-years in diameter.
