We are pretty hooked on the specialty daffodils around here. Each year, I can’t resist adding a few more varieties to the collection. This year, we added mass plantings of ‘Pheasant’s Eye’ and ‘Stainless’ to the farm. We also dug up a few thousand that were planted in the old perennial rows and transferred them to the back field, where they’ll be happy growing amongst the peonies. To efficiently pull those thousands of bulbs out of the ground, we scooped up their beds with the bucket of the tractor and dumped the soil back on to the ground nearby. A few of us farmers scurried around and collected the bulbs as if we were hunting for Easter eggs. It was a pretty quick process and it sure beat trying to manually shovel them all out! We planted mixed bulb collections of white, yellow, and pink daffodils back into the new display garden where they will put on quite a show this spring in the long bed right along the road. We have a few other large, densely planted daffodil beds on the farm. I love watching them come into bloom in the spring. I’m partial to the apricot/pint peach ones.
