Aslam o Alaikum Good Morning 🌻🌄🌻🌄🌻 Today's post is about tuskers. What is a tusker? A tusker is an elephant with atleast one tusk heavier than 100 pounds (around 45kg). It doesn't matter if the other tusk is broken or at lot smaller, only one of the two tusks has to weigh a 100 pounds or more for an elephant to be a tusker. Unfortunately today there are less than 20 tuskers left in the world. A lot of them live in East Africa (mostly Kenya), but Kruger National Park and Tembe Elephant Park are also home to some of them. The biggest tusker I have ever seen was Isilo. He died a couple of years ago of natural causes (old age). Obviously you can't ask an elephant to put there tusk on a scale, so as long as the elephant is alive it would always be an estimation. At some point a potential tusker will be at the stage 'yes or no'. People like Leonard who have been working with elephants for so long (he got almost 13 years of experience) get a very good feel for the weight of a tusk, their guess is usually pretty accurate. However the exact weight can only be told after the elephant has died and the tusks been weight. A big portion of the tusk is actually in the skull, around 50-60cm. Tusks come in all shapes and sizes, some are really thick and some are extremely short.
