What is "good" and why do we aim for it?

From my perspective, the phrase "good" refers to something valuable, or to something that satisfies a need or want. Philosophers, including Aristotle, have refined this concept and applied it to a variety of contexts. Being good, may imply following the dictates of one's conscience, an internal voice that assesses our actions as right or wrong, as deserving of one's approval or condemnation. We obtain a sense of uprightness, of rectitude, and escape feelings of guilt and shame by being good.
