I came across a proverb from West Africa that says "Before corn came into this world, chickens were not starving".... It's a little funny, but full of wisdom. I don't know how you would interpret it. My interpretation is that although we might come to depend on someone, we can still survive without them the same way we survived before we met that person. What do you think?
