Another notable characteristic of Bitcoin is its limited supply. There will only ever be 21 million bitcoins in existence ensuring scarcity and protecting it from inflation. New bitcoins are generated through a process called mining where powerful computers compete to solve complex mathematical problems. Miners are rewarded with newly minted bitcoins for their computational efforts.
