How to become much more disciplined through practice, and why motivation is unreliable.

As the title says, I will discuss what has helped me establish self-discipline in my daily activities. When I originally began my self-improvement journey, I attempted to establish a variety of habits in my life, but I made mistakes by focusing only on motivation in order to maintain my habits. Motivation is an unsustainable source of energy since it is external and keeps changing at unexpected times over which you seem to have no control, none of the habits I attempted to build ever remained with me long enough to be even called true habits. After a year, I eventually realized that maybe what I needed to work on was not motivation, but discipline, because good discipline would enable you to do any task required, regardless of your emotional condition at the time. About on how to establish discipline from the bottom up, I did whatever I did and would suggest to someone who is new to this: start with the little activity which you find frustrating to accomplish. Making my bed every morning was a difficult obligation for me, so I began by accomplishing that specific task each day. The most important thing to remember would be that discipline is pretty much similar to a muscle; the more you're using it, the much more stronger it becomes, and this is something that can indeed be developed. When making my bed became part of the routine to me, I progressed to a daily activity that was more overwhelming, which for me would be going to take a bath with warm water. I moved another step up and pushed myself to much more difficult tasks once I was comfortable with that as well. I kept repeating this practice of gradually pushing myself through difficulty until I was able to create a number of habits that stayed with me. I understand how intimidating and difficult developing discipline can be for the ones who is only starting to this journey, however remember that gradually improving at anything in life has always been about small steps, and these small steps will probably lead to remarkable outcomes, to the point in which you will no longer recognize yourself. Consider developing discipline as a game: each time you exercise discipline by resisting temptation and desires or accomplish a task you didn't want to do, you become even more disciplined than ever before. I'd also like to mention that for me, running was indeed the ultimate discipline enhancer. It is because there is really no such thing as pausing or resting during a run, and that it is a constant internal fight against your mind asking you to quit since you are exhausted, therefore completing a run normally demands a significant amount of discipline, and this discipline can be applied to any activity in life. I genuinely hope that anyone who reads this finds something useful in it, and I wish all of those who are working to become more disciplined in their lives the best of success!
