Is Education a scam? What's my views?

“Education is not the learning of facts but the training of the mind to think.”

– Albert Einstein

PS: This is a challenge on Hive and we were told to give our views about Education is a scam. Since most of my subscribers aren't on Hive, I feel this should be posted here too so we can learn something.

I've tried looking back to how things were going smoothly in the past. Our parents were always sounding into our ears to go to school, be educated and become great so that we can work in the best company with a huge salary enough to make our dreams come true. How has it been for you then? I am talking about those years from 2000, 2001 etc but as it is now, things have changed...I wouldn't want to use the word "worse" because I still believe in the good change.

Our people have been poisoned with different mindsets about education and how the system has gone bad. I look at it too and I just shake my head.

Well, I have never been among those who said "Education is a scam". Why would it be so?

Education as it may be is a process of gaining knowledge. Have you heard of the phrase "If education is expensive, try ignorance?"

Why would you want to try ignorance? Being ignorant is like you surrendering yourself to be a slave that is far from freedom. While growing up, I have come to realize that without connection even as an educated person, you won't go anywhere but still, you have to earn that certificate. Who knows what the future holds.

Many people that keep saying education is a scam have just been made to see the wrong part of education as it is.

Let's see it this way;

I asked my good friend @Olasquare of his view about education being a scam or not and here is the summary of what he told me:

Education is not for everybody but it is necessary to support every child from basic education to secondary level because one of the objectives of basic education is to inculcate in the mind of learners the spirit of enquiry and creativity, of a sound mind i.e grammatically and intellectual development.

But when they get to tertiary institutions, it should be by choice and not for them to be forced to go to school because most of them aren't meant to continue in education, but are made to go into the line of craft making etc. When they are being forced to go to school, it becomes a waste of years when, what they are doing after school doesn't have any effect on what they studied. (Perhaps these are those who think education is a scam.)

One of the major factors bringing this issue up is the ASUU STRIKE in Nigeria. The strike has been a major problem for every youth and it makes everything frustrating. Instead of students being in school to graduate on time and focus on the next thing, they are being delayed at home for long months which makes everyone find other ways to make ends meet as they do not know how the future would be.

Through that, so many people have identified their creativity and put it into action while others tried other means to make money and when they call off the strike, they don't feel like going to school again because they are already doing what they have been used to during those times of being at home without education. For this kind of person, it is easy to say education is a scam.

I was told the story of one of my uncles who refused to further his education because according to him, he said he wouldn't be able to focus or do well than going to learn a skill. After much persuasion, he was left alone to go for what he wanted, that was after finishing his junior school education. Now, he is doing fine with the skill he has learned.

Let's say for such a person who was forced to go to school, it would have been a waste of years for him because his ability isn't for education but to learn a craft or skill but for those who would want to go to school, they are free to go.

ANOTHER VIEW TO IT

The education sector should be blamed though because they fail to do what is right and made people think in such a way. When lecturers are being bribed to pass a student after offering their bodies for marks, even to the head of a school, who should we blame?

When a student has done his or her best reading and doing everything that should be done but fails...Who should be blamed?

When they start seeing those who only paid for grades being given employment through connection or bribery, they start to conclude why did they go to school in the first place?.

During my school days, I only get to see new faces when it was exam time and I would ask my friends if they were also our colleagues, and I would be shocked when they say "Yes". They have their ways of getting grades while the serious ones suffer for it because we don't have money or body to surrender to these bad and corrupt lecturers.

Na who know way go know the road

This means it is those who know the way that will get away with it through illegal means.

The truth is, to me, education can never be a scam because it is a way of helping you to gain knowledge while you put into practice what you have been taught outside the world of work.

There will always be a big difference between someone who goes to school from the one who doesn't even if the latter succeed in life, the gap would always be there and the chance can't be competed with.

I think many people have depended so much on the government to provide them with employment and when they are rejected after gaining a certificate, they become disappointed and they conclude education is a scam.

Why?

This is because they have seen most people who do not go to school but are doing fine. These kind of people need to understand education isn't meant for everybody and that doesn't make them think it is a scam.

Some might not have the means to go to school and so, they settle for what they could do to survive.

I have seen old people coming back to receive lectures in my department. I would be competing with an old man in another department for a seat in class and I wonder why it took them long to value education?

One way or the other, opportunity would show that you will need to go back to school to obtain a degree certificate. Perhaps you have been among those who think education is a scam.

Education is for you to have experience and knowledge, so you don't hook yourself in the world of poverty and poor mentality.

While researching this topic, I read different views. I would say 80% of those who replied thought that education and schooling isn't a scam.

According to Seyi from the National Space Research and Development Agency which can be found here

"Education is not a scam, but a huge human capital investment. Schooling coupled with entrepreneurial skill acquisition for self-reliance is one of the ways to reduce overdependence on government as the major employer of labour in developing nations. Youths need the right orientation about the purpose(s) of education, not only as a means of earning a livelihood but as a cure to ignorance and poverty of minds".

Education is a cure to ignorance and poverty.

There will always be a big difference between a person who goes to school to study from someone who didn't. Their mentalities would be different and their ways of perspective definitely wouldn't be the same.

That doesn't mean those who didn't go to school aren't doing fine. Just like I said, education isn't for everyone so that those who are supposed to learn a craft but went for education, won't be wasted years for them. The same thing with someone who is supposed to go to school but went in line of learning a skill, it won't be a wasted time for him or her too. Do what your ability can carry and never force yourself.

I have a friend who also thinks education is a scam. We have both graduated, but pls kindly ask her who a guidance counsellor is?, she wouldn't say anything. Why? She was never serious with education and everything she does now even as a graduate, is questionable. Why did she go to school? Did she even pass through school or does she allows the school to pass through her?

What if an opportunity shows up tomorrow with her proving that she went to school and earn that certificate by her sweat, what would she offer? This same person is so talented in hairdressing and she would always say that education isn't meant for her. Why did she now go? It means those years are a waste for her.

In conclusion;

Education is good and important but it shouldn't be forced on anyone because someone passionate about going to school wouldn't think education is a scam but only those who have been forced or who think their friends are going to school, should also go. Know what you want before it's too late for you.

Thanks for reading

You got the message. Yes, it's not a scam but I have issues with those who try to force people into education line; tertiary institution when clearly they are better cut for something else. Basic education is good... I would always support that.

The problem with people saying education is a scam is that they confuse education with schooling, especially schooling in Nigeria. Education can never be a scam for someone that knows how to apply the knowledge they have acquired in real life situations, a lot of people go to school but doesn't mean they are educated, that's where the difference lies

We all have our different purpose of going to school to be educated and if you think it's a scam, that is what you believe and not what I believe. One who knows that through education, he will acquire knowledge, will not think education is a scam.

I agree to what @Olasquare said here. let the youth chose the path and career they want to have in the future. education is not a scam, but the people behind the education is.

I believe education is not a scam, we all have our different views all right, for me I believe education will work for me, why some believe it won't work for them, there is always a big difference between someone that didn't go to school and the ones that went to school, if you are going to be an hairdresser finally there should be a difference in how you do things and set up your salon from someone who never attended school, there should be brilliance in it, I believe school is not a scam because we actually gained some knowledge there.

I'd always tell those who say education is scam to drop out. It may seem harsh, but I can't imagine why someone will continue with something you think is a fraud, wasting your time and other resources. The purpose of school is actually to open your mind to possibilities and help you think critically. Gone are the days where education was a sure guarantee for success. Times have changed to need more from people than just their certificate, but that doesn't mean education has become less potent too.

Things have changed and the sole aim of education is to empower you with skills and knowledge you need to make success by yourself.

Education is not a scam, but it’s the situation of the country that leave us with no other option than to say it is. Today, everyone is aware of the crime rate. Do you know how much a yahoo boy earns daily and what he has accomplished? And there is another graduate being paid 40k per month what do you expect the graduate to say?

$ 0.02

Then we have to see it in another angle and ask which one would last? A yahoo who receives money every day will someday be caught and nothing will be sure again, whereas someone collecting salary every month has an opportunity every month of receiving money. Even if the latter get sacked, there is still possiblity of dusting his CV and looking for job elsewhere because he has acquired the knowledge than a yahoo person.

With the way things are going currently in the world (let me use Africa for this), the positivity that comes out of education if you're not ready to flow with the "normal way" is VERY LOW. You stated some of the examples in your article like bribing to get marks or jobs, while the people that can't do these continue to suffer.

Now, looking at this this way, it's the people with certificate/knowledge that would go for a work if opportunity presents itself. Image if an uncle calls you to bring your certificate for a sure job and you don't have because "education is a scam"? Missed opportunity!

Another one is that, not just the certificate but the experience, knowledge and ways to adapt to things matters too. If you've passed through school, you must learn how to flow with different kind of people and the Nysc helps it all... leaving alone in a complete far away hood.

The last here, an uneducated person will see it so hard to pick up opportunities online. Example is this site.

Let add this... I can't count the times I've helped People to write letter in bank hall. The could not pen down a problem in a paper when customer care asked them to do so. Not discriminating

Can you imagine. You have said nothing but the truth here. Education is you gaining experience and proving it to the world that you went to school. There is more to Education than saying it's a scam when in the end, you will be the one to lose a big opportunity when a job is ready for you. Thank you for the scenarios you pointed out.

Though education we can better human than without education. Education needed lot of investigation no doubt but It is not scam because if you got something cheap then you deliver something in better way with a good cost. Sister I agreed to your point our government should synchronized this education system.

It is not a SCAM but it helps us instead to have a better picture of our future. It is indeed that it really depends of the hardwork of a person but there's really an advantage of being an educated person. That's my personal opinion about it.

Education is the key to gain knowledge and be able to make use of it outside the world.

Education is not a scam.

It's important to be able to say that, because a lot of Nigerians have been propagating this myth for years. There's a lot of people out there who are still convinced that education is a scam, and they have no idea what they're talking about.

Well, everything for Naija don turn scam, even adulthood 😀

Education is not a scam because it's more than just getting a diploma or degree. It's about learning how to think critically. It's about learning how to solve problems with your intellect, instead of just relying on rote memorization. Education is also about learning how to take care of yourself—how to get good grades without resorting to cheating or other shortcuts.

The reason why education isn't a scam is because it doesn't promise you anything; it gives you everything you need in order to succeed on your own terms.

That is it. Education gives us everything with which we would succeed with in life. You have said the truth. Thank you 😊

In my opinion education aims to develop one's thinking power and be able and able to manage grammar and calculations so that they are able and can understand something difficult, maybe the problem here is if education is said to be a good future then it might be something that is not objective because without education also people can achieve a bright future but that person may not have extensive knowledge like people who continue their education.

Definitely! You are on point. There will be a big gap between a person who is educated from one who isn't.

Victor once said Education is scam on the gc and i wanted to counter him but i know if i start typing it will be too long, moreover, i doubted if he was ready to learn. The situation of things in the country is the reason for the common conception that Education is scam. Education doesn't necessarily have to extend yo tertiary institution as bro Ola said, but it’s a basic need of every human being.

Sturdying to be a Doctor but practicing as a blogger doesn't make Education scam. Education prepares you and make you open minded to opportunities . The mistake we make is that we believe "Going to school is the key to having a good job and success" but it isn't "Education" itself is the key. Education prepares your mind and teaches you to make use of opportunities when they present itself. We need to learn to be problem solvers, job providers instead of feeling getting a certificate ascertain our ascension into wealth.

Abeg leave that boy alone. I don't think he would want to learn even if you counter him 😂😂

The truth is, basic education is important but going to school doesn't guarantee success or being rich, you have to have the knowledge of what you have learnt to be able to work things through yourself. Thank you for your contribution.

We can't be overseas and say education is a scam, people just say it here because our educational system here is very bad and has grown worse over the years. Like you said, education is not for everyone cos I have a brother who only stop his education at the secondary level and since then, he went to learn a skill and he is doing very well and great in life. It's not everyone that will go to school but we need to know the basics cos it will help in the long run.

Education can never be a scam, it is a major breakthrough of man, so why label it a scam?

When I read online people asking about Steve jobs, Charles Barbage and other great discoverers who were dropouts I laugh. You may not know, how much they had invested in their little time in school but you just want to conclude, we can make progress even without going to school.

That is possible but the exposure, those awesome tips and techniques to use garnish our lifestyle in public won't be available. Education is never a scam but you thinking it is, makes you a scam .
