I can still picture myself newlywed nearly 40 years ago, renting a home in Pasir Panjang, Kuala Terengganu. The home belonged to renowned Quran reciter Haji Ismail. He won the state Quran Recital competition when he was younger. When we rented his home, he was still active as a jury member for such competitions despite his advanced age. I remember buying a papaya fruit. and instead of throwing the black seeds, I left it outside to dry. Once dried I place the seeds in a container and left it outside for it to grow. Yes, the whole container was filled with young papaya seedlings. Then I placed the taller and stronger ones on the ground to grow. It was simple because the soil was sandy, and it swiftly reached maturity and began to bear fruit. Nice sweet papaya, I recently purchased a few Hawaiian-variety papayas. Two of the trees that were sown from the seeds bore fruit. and is still. Therefore, I think we would have a steady supply of papaya for the upcoming few months. Not many, but sufficient.
