The Gulf Stream On August 4th, 1821, a bottle that had been thrown into the water off the coast of Iceland on July 7th was discovered close to the Cambree Isles. It had travelled 80 miles in 40 days; if the winds had not affected the course, this would indicate a current moving 40 miles south-eastward every day. Undoubtedly a branch of the vast gulf stream, this current travels over the western coasts of Europe and Africa, then across the Atlantic to America, northward along its coast to Newfoundland, then eastward to Iceland, before returning along the same path.
