There's lightning on Jupiter! This 3D rendered artist's conception shows bolts of electricity illuminating the Jovian cloud tops. The moon's Europa and Io (from left to right) hang in the sky as the distant sun rises beyond Jupiter's thick hydrogen and helium atmosphere. On Earth, most of our lightning strikes around the equator, but on Jupiter, it is more prevalent in the hemispheres, specifically the northern one. The mechanisms that create the different kinds of lightning on Jupiter are a mystery we hope to learn more about as NASA's Juno spacecraft moves closer to the planet during its extended mission.
