Taytay, Earth? or Taytay, Mars? Here's a photo of the Taytay crater in Mars, named after a town in Palawan, Philippines. This was captured by Mars Colour Camera (MCC) onboard India’s Mars Orbiter Spacecraft last August 13, 2015. Taytay is an impact crater located in the Oxia Palus quadrangle of Mars (0.37° N, 19.65° W) with a diameter of 18.4 kilometers. There are other Martian craters named after Philippine towns. The International Astronomical Union (IAU) Working Group for Planetary System Nomenclature (WGPSN) names the small craters on Mars after the small towns around the world with populations of 100,000 or less. Although the naming didn't necessarily mean a commemoration. In the Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature maintained by the IAU and the USGS, at least five Martian craters were named after the small towns in the Philippines: Bacolor (Pampanga), Camiling (Tarlac), Daet (Camarines Norte), Naic (Cavite), and Taytay (Palawan). #AstroShaker READ: https://facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=3181675018553280&id=1977102099010584 Image Credit and labeled by: Mars Orbiter Mission/Indian Space Research Organization References: [1] Department of Space, Indian Space Research Organisation.
