From Learner to Educator: Why I Decided to Become a Tutor
If someone asked me maybe two years ago, “Do you want to become a tutor?” I probably say no. Not because I didn’t like helping people, but because I was busy just trying to understand the things myself. ICT was already confusing for me that time, and to imagine teaching others? That felt impossible. I remember clearly when I started learning ICT, everything felt so heavy. So many new words, software I never use before, and concepts that go in one ear, come out the other. But even when it was difficult, I kept going. Sometimes slow, sometimes very slow, but I moved forward. I studied, watched videos, asked questions. Some days I understood nothing, but I still came back the next day. One time in class, something happened that really stayed in my mind. We were doing group work, and one classmate asked how to do something in Excel. Just a simple formula, but she didn’t get it. I tried to explain in the way I understood it. And after I showed her, she said, “Now I understand! You explain better than the teacher.” I laughed, but in my heart, it was a big feeling. I didn’t know how happy that small moment could make me. After that, more classmates started asking me for help. Not because I was expert or anything, but because maybe they felt I could explain in a way that makes sense. I realized something important then — when you are still close to the struggle, you know how to explain it better to others. You remember what confused you before, so you can explain it clearly now. Then one day I just sat and asked myself — why do I enjoy this so much? Why do I feel excited when someone says, “Oh now I get it!” after I explain? And my answer was this: because it makes me feel useful. Helpful. Like I am not only learning for myself, but also for others. That’s when I decided I want to become a tutor. Not just someone who knows a subject, but someone who knows how to teach it too. So I started studying how to teach, how to explain, how to support students with different learning styles. It’s not always easy, I have to say. Sometimes I still feel unsure if I’m doing it right. Still, I forget things, I make mistakes, I doubt myself. But I always remind myself that even the best tutors started from zero. They learned step by step, just like I am doing now. Teaching, for me, is not only giving answers. It’s about understanding people, being patient, and growing together. And the truth is, the more I try to teach, the more I learn myself. It’s like both ways, not just one. I never thought I would say this, but now, teaching is something I love. I want to continue this path, and maybe in future, I can help others who were once like me — confused, unsure, but willing to learn. Thanks for reading my story. If you are also learning something, and thinking maybe to help others one day — I tell you, don’t wait to be perfect. You can start now, just like I did.
