Breaking News: Sun Set At Noon
It's the weekend. And as usual, we are all busy with one domestic chores or the other. Before now, on a Saturday like this,I would have a number of parties to attend but there are no parties to attend, probably because of the ongoing Ramadan.
In the part of Lagos where I reside, the indigenes are of the Ijebu ethnic group. They are Yoruba too. One common thing about them is that they love to party. There is no other ethnic group that organises very expensive parties like the Ijebu.
But during the Ramadan period, the whole place is silent because predominantly, the Ijebu are Muslims and do observe the Ramadan.
The only kind of parties you are likely to see around town during this period is the wedding ceremony and I have none to attend. So, I had to stay home with my family and see how to enjoy the weekend.
For almost fourteen days now, the national grip of our electricity supply has collapsed and we have not had power supply. That seems weird right? But we are used to it already. You know what they say about bad governance, where all the basic social amenities of life are not available.
You must have heard some smaller nations listing what they have done to maintain a frequent power supply to the people, here the only thing you can achieve is to be able to purchase a power generating set to be able to run power supply for your family. There is hardly any home where there is no power generating set around here.
My stay at home this weekend bothered me. There is no power supply and the noise from my neighbours power generating set made it worse. Power supply is very important. The merit derived from power supply is uncountable. And as an independent state, we ought to have reached that point where power supply isn't a problem anymore. But the reverse is the case. It looks like we have not even started a power supply project.
So, I decided to do some other things. Since school will be resuming on Monday, I decided to clean my shoes and that of my children just to occupy myself. I had to request my children to bring out all their footwear and to clean them up with water and polish.
By mid day,I was already done with that. I had to sundry the shoes. The sun in Nigeria is another thing. In less than two hours, all the wet shoes have been dried up. That's how strong the heat from the sun could be.
From the looks on the face of my wards, I knew they wanted me to power the generating set but was considering not adding more noise to the already existing noise that is coming from the power generating sets of our neighbour. To please them, I started the generator.
There was shout of joy from the dining. They were set to watch their favorite channel, the cartoon network but I wanted something else. Before I came to the room, they have settled the matter by switching to the channel of their choice.
I took the remote control and changed the channels to Channels new. And the first thing that came on the screen was a breaking news. I didn't bother to see the frowning of their faces. There was no need to patronize them.
