How to organize a stress-free move

Of all the rules to follow when moving from one place to another, the most important is to do as much as possible as far in advance as possible. It is advisable to make a list of all the things that need to be carried out, to make plans in advance.

  • Among the things that can be done well in advance (sometimes four to six weeks before the move-in date) is to notify the phone and electric companies of the address change. It is also important to notify the mail in time, so that they send the correspondence to the new address and no letter or postal package is lost. If you regularly receive newspapers or magazines through the mail, be sure to notify them of the change in advance.

  • Contact banks and offices to make the change of address in any type of personal documents.

  • Make sure you bring only what you like or need to your new home. Don't pack everything up and get rid of a lot later. That previous lesson will save you time and money.

  • If there is something that should not be left until the last minute, it is packing. There are many items that are not used every day that can start packing well in advance. Among them are books, plates, glasses, ornaments, clothes typical of another season, etc.

  • Get enough of everything you need to pack: chests, trunks, box, tape, labels, marking pens, and whatever newsprint you can get.

  • When packing dishes, glassware, or any fragile items, be sure to wrap them tightly with enough paper to keep them safe and secure. Mirrors in particular are extremely fragile. If you have a very valuable one and you are not sure how to pack it, it is preferable to pay an expert to do it.

  • To pack you need sturdy boxes of different sizes. Start purchasing them early.

  • The cups and glasses are first filled with papers and then each one is wrapped separately. Before wrapping the dishes, it is good to put a slightly crumpled piece of paper on top. After being wrapped, the plates are placed in the center of the box and the glasses and cups on the edges. Fill in all the empty spaces with more newsprint, fabrics, and even clothing. This protects glass objects in case of impacts or falls.

  • Write on a label or on the surface of the box everything you put inside it (bedding, glasses, plates, the living room lamp, etc.). This way, you will know just by reading the signs, what is in each box and it will be much easier for you to unpack in your new home.

  • When packing, do not overfill the boxes. These should look flat, not bulky or half open. Secure them well with tape and rope so that they do not open on the way.

  • If you have some essential things like a small radio, a book, an aspirin bottle, or your child's favorite toy, put them in a separate box. Wear it yourself and don't let it get mixed up with your other things. It may be hard to find later!

  • The pots, containers and pots in the kitchen should be placed whenever possible, one inside the other. Cutlery and meat knives and ladles are stored in the tallest containers. Spice jars can be put into small containers and then sealed with a seal.

  • When putting things in the boxes, the heaviest things are put below and the lightest ones above. The empty spaces are then filled in with clothing or soft objects.

  • Remember that sheets and towels are perfect for protecting delicate objects. The same can be put extended, forming "layers" between flat objects such as pictures and mirrors, or rolled around glass items. In this way, at the same time that fragile things are protected, sheets and towels are packed.

  • Books weigh more than is generally believed. Always pack them in small boxes. If you store them in large boxes, they can become too heavy to move.

  • Lamps should never be packed with the bulbs on. The bulbs are removed first and, if it is necessary to carry any, it is much better to put them in the boxes or suitcases that will be carried by hand, where they will not break.

  • The drawers of desks, dressers and cabinets must be well secured to the furniture so that they will not fall. They can also be removed and carried separately.

  • So that the rugs are not damaged on the road, the best method of carrying them is to roll them up and then tie them well. It must be remembered, however, that rolled or unrolled carpets occupy a large amount of space in the vehicle in which they are transported.

  • An easy way to pack clothes is to place them one by one, without removing the racks, on a blanket. When they have put a few, the blanket is folded over them and they are transported like this.

  • When possible, furniture legs (beds, tables, sofas) should be removed. In this way, they are easier to transport and suffer less damage.

  • Before packing delicate and expensive appliances, such as televisions, stereos, computers, find out well how to do it and if possible, carry it personally or supervise the transfer.

  • Jewelry and personal documents should never be packed with other things. It is best to take them personally. Do not put flammable liquids or products in boxes or packages that could cause fire.
