Untold Secrets

The smell of perfectly ripe strawberries filled the air as though someone had walked in wearing the sweetest of perfumes. The only problem with this was that the room held only one occupant and he was most definitely not wearing that scent.

He froze as the aroma encompassed him. He had been smelling it on and off for a few months now. At first he'd assumed it was one of the women who had been at the house but he now knew that was impossible. None of them had been to his door for weeks now.

The only woman he had ever known to wear that perfume was his late wife Grace. It was hard for him to believe she had been gone almost a year already. Now and then his sister in law and his mother in law had stopped by to check on him. Their last visit had been more than two months ago now. He had to admit, he was relieved. They reminded him so much of his Grace that it hurt to look at them.

Shortly after her death, he had the entire house redone. His in laws hadn't been too happy. They had felt like he was erasing every sign of Graces' existence. He had explained to them that it was just too painful keeping the house as it was. Too much a reminder of the woman who was no longer by his side but he wasn't sure they had fully seen his side of things no matter how much he hoped they would understand.

He had gotten all new furniture for the house down to the last coaster. Every piece she had chosen or they had chosen together was gone. Sold off or tossed out. Even the bedding had been replaced. He needed a fresh start but he couldn't move. This was the next best thing.

The only thing he had left of hers, the only thing he had refused to part with was the letter he normally kept under his bed. The paper he was currently holding. It was creased and worn from being constantly read over and over for almost a year. A letter from his beloved wife. Every now and then he contemplated throwing it into the fire but some part of him wouldn't stop clinging to it. Today it was finally time to let go.

As he tossed the crumpled paper into the fire, a loud shriek split the air and the impossibly sweet smell in the room rapidly changed. No longer fresh and saccharine, but moldy and sour. The room rapidly became suffocating and the fire leapt from the grate circling him.

What authorities later found baffled them. The charred remains of a human body. Though the body hadn't been moved, everything around it was untouched save for a mirror with one word etched into it.

The message made no sense until they recovered the bodies of three women in a small hidden room in the unfinished basement.

Thank you. I actually got the idea because I caught my own perfume in the air lol. I don't know how it turned into this but, I guess I shouldn't question it too much.
