Fireside Confession

'Nice night.'

Surprised, she whirled around to see a man standing behind her chair a few feet away.

The night air was pleasantly cool and she had only been trying to find some peace and quiet when she'd come out here. She had expected everyone to be inside at the party.

'Can I join you?' He nodded in the general direction of the firepit she was seated at.

She composed herself and shrugged half-heartedly as though his request meant nothing.

'Be my guest.'

He nodded in thanks and took a seat next to her despite there being several other chairs he could have chosen.

They sat in silence surrounded by the sounds of the crackling fire and the crickets chirping in the darkness and she let herself relax into her chair once again.

The tinkling sound of ice against glass drew her attention and she watched, transfixed as he savored the taste of his drink, eyes closed.

She blushed as he cleared his throat and she realized she had been staring at his mouth, and he had noticed.

'You really shouldn't do that.' His voice was soft but the warning in it was clear as the night sky overhead.

She looked away guiltily. How could she ignore it when he was so close? She could feel the heat radiating from him, hot as the fire in front of them.

And more dangerous.

She peeked up at him from beneath her lashes. He was staring at her with an intensity that made her squirm in her chair, squeezing her thighs together delicately.

His sharp eyes flashed down to her legs, then back up to her face within the same second.

Had she imagined it?

She didn't think so. There had been too many times she had felt eyes on her only to meet his gaze across the room. She had seen him watching her, caught his eyes roaming over her body from time to time.

After the first few times of her noticing she had started making it a point to ask him how she looked. It had sort of become a ritual for her.

She stood up and did a small twirl before stopping to face him.

'What do you think?'

He relaxed at this familiar topic and his eyes took in the sight of her in the short; almost too short emerald green dress. His eyes met hers.

'Beautiful. As always.' He raised his glass in a salute to her and she sat back down, brushing his knee lightly as she did.

If he noticed, he didn't let on.

'What brings you out here?'

'The same as you I would imagine.' He gave her a side long glance.

His scent swirled around her and she found herself leaning closer, drawn in by the slightly spicy musk he always seemed to exude. She didn't know if it was a cologne he wore or his natural scent but she loved it either way. If it was natural to him, they really should bottle it.

He put his hands on her shoulders and gently pushed her back. She hadn't realized she was so close, she had almost kissed him. Without even thinking, she realized that was exactly what she had been about to do. What she would be doing right now if he hadn't stopped her.

How could I be so stupid?

Mortified she scooted over to the far side of her chair. It wasn't enough space but she couldn't bring herself to move any further. She looked up at the stars shining brightly and they swam before her eyes. She silently willed the tears not to fall. Not yet at least.

His warm voice reached her ears, so quiet she almost missed it.

'I want to. But we can't.' His voice was full of pain, longing and regret.

She shot to her feet as anger over his rejection and their situation and her own stupidity once again hit home. How many times would she put herself through this? How long were they going to do this little dance before her heart broke?

I think it's already too late, don't you?

'Of course not!'

He winced as her voice rose, causing him to look around to make sure no one had overheard her exclamation.

She turned and began walking away, out of the circle of light and warmth provided by the fire crackling merrily.

'Dammit Hart. Don't do this. Not again.'

She looked over her shoulder at him. He was standing up now, a conflicted look on his face like he wasn't sure if he should follow her or not.

'Me? What about you?' She didn't bother to wait for an answer. She had gone all of two steps and he was there, taking her by the shoulders only this time to make her face him.

'What am I supposed to do? I want you. You have no idea how hard it is seeing you two together. Knowing it's him by your side when all I want is for it to be me.'

I want you.

He had finally said the words. She stared at him a mix of shock, awe and relief flooding through her at his confession.

She did kiss him then. She poured all of her want and need, all of her frustration into the kiss and he didn't push her back or pull away. He kissed her back and for a moment, nothing else mattered.
