They entered the coffee shop together and split off as she went to claim a table and waited for him to place their orders. A minute later he gently placed her drink in front of her and she murmured a soft thank you to which he nodded in response.
They sat across from each other, seemingly interested in their meaningless little conversation. Every now and then, they would take sips from their respective cups of coffee, their eyes never leaving the other.
Perhaps they thought their witty banter would mask the truth, or perhaps, they were the only ones in the shop who didn't see it. Although to everyone around, their chemistry was electric, both seemed to ignore it's existence.
Now and then, the girls' hand would idly trace a pattern on the table as she spoke, each time pausing when he replied almost as though her hand would prevent her from hearing his every word. It appeared that there was nothing more important to her, than the movement of his lips and the words that formed between them.
Undenounced to her, this movement did not go unnoticed by him. In fact, to even the most casual observer it was clear he noticed everything she did. Every shift in her chair, every twitch of her shoulders.
He suddenly made to get up, and for a moment a look of panic crossed her face. As he explained she calmed, blushing more so than before. Her eyes followed him as he made his way across the room to the bathroom. She lingered on the door for a moment before staring wistfully into space ignorant of the of the other patrons.
Upon his return, they smiled slightly almost shyly at one another as he reclaimed his spot at the little table where they continued their conversation. Now and then, there would be a lull but the silence between them was a comfortable one. They sat for a few minutes more before standing. She watched as he collected both cups and made to throw them out before holding the door waiting for her to exit ahead of him.
*I actually wrote this years ago and decided to expand on it slightly. A better title has always eluded me but I really like this piece. I was hoping to make it longer originally but for some reason, it feels finished now. Like there's nothing else it needs. Maybe one day I'll look at it again and change my mind. Who know? For now though, this is it.*
