A woodpecker preparing provisions for the winter. First, find a dead tree and start digging holes for acorns. Each hole is made very carefully, because if the hole is large, other birds can easily steal the acorn. If the hole is narrow, the acorn may break or become damaged. At the end of summer, the woodpecker's "jewelry" work ends, at this time the acorns mature and take their place on the tree. The trunk of a large tree can contain around 50,000 acorns, allowing the bird a quiet winter.
