Seriously, life is unfair. I know that sounds really depressing, but it’s also really true.
Think about it: We all have to go through some form of struggle in our life. Whether it’s fighting with your parents, getting cancer, or having to deal with rejection, there’s no way to avoid it. So why is life unfair?
In this post, I explore what unfair is and how it affects our lives. I also share some insights on how to cope with it.
Our first insight is to understand what unfair really means...
I’m sure that at this point in your life, you’ve felt the pain of unfairness. Perhaps it was something small like the last cookie being taken from the jar on a long night of studying for exams. Or maybe it was something big like your parents fighting with you over going to a party but they let your big sister go.
Regardless of the situation, we all know what unfair feels like: A sense of anger and frustration bubbling up inside us that turns into an urge to yell at ourselves or others. Gross, right? Don’t worry though; I’ve been there too, everybody has been there, and I wanted to let you know that we’re all in this together.
Now that you know the feeling, let’s figure out what it is and where it comes from.
Unfairness exists when the world around us doesn’t match our expectations. In other words, we perceive something as unfair because it causes us to feel negative emotions or makes us think something is wrong.
We’ve all experienced unfairness. Maybe you got in an argument with your parents, missed the bus, were late for school, or felt jealous when someone has more than you.
You might not have been aware of this at first, but there was something causing that pain in your chest: A mismatch between what we expected to happen and what actually happened.
Growth By experiencing unfairness, we get the chance to grow. We learn how to deal with negative emotions like anger and sadness, which make us stronger human beings. Understanding why something was unfair can also help us realize what’s wrong in the world.
Unfortunately, not all of us will get the chance to grow as individuals from unfairness. Some might directly experience unfairness that causes them physical pain and discomfort like getting cancer or when someone dies. In these cases, there’s very little we can do but be sad for our losses and figure out ways to live with it.
Despite being painful, unfairness is a necessary part of life. It allows us to learn how to deal with the inevitable struggles we will face as human beings. Like in any situation, there are positives and negatives. It depends on how we perceive it and cope with it that determines whether it’s a positive or negative experience.
You might disagree with me and say that unfairness is a bad thing. Who’d want to feel anger, sadness, frustration, and confusion? Well, if you do think it’s bad, just remember this: Everything in life has some form of good and bad. Unfairness allows us to appreciate the good, which will help us better live and deal with life’s inevitable challenges.
Difficulties In Life And Suffering All this sounds great, but what about the big things that aren’t so simple? Like when you have cancer or lose your parents?
I would be lying if I said that they aren’t hard. Cancer and the loss of a parent are both very difficult situations to experience, and unfairness plays an important role in these instances.
Understanding why something is unfair can be key to getting through tough times, but sometimes it doesn’t make things any easier. Sometimes we’re just left with sadness and anger that can cause us to make irrational decisions.
But as I mentioned, unfairness is a necessary part of life even when it feels like the world has crumbled down around you.
Sometimes we might feel like unfairness is so bad that it outweighs the good, which makes us want to give up on life. That’s understandable; there are some pretty messed up situations out there that it’s hard to believe that they will ever get better.
But we have to remember that unfairness is a part of life, and if we don’t deal with it now, then we run the risk of facing similar situations down the road and not being able to cope as effectively. As difficult as they may be, unfair situations allow us to learn and evolve as human beings.
It’s hard to say how long it will take for a tough situation to get better, but if we never deal with the unfairness that we face now, then things will probably be worse in the future. Also, sometimes life isn’t fair it’s just how it is. The sooner we accept that unfairness is a normal part of life, the better our chances are of dealing with a similar situation if or when it does happen again.
It’s okay to be angry about unfairness nobody would fault you for that. Sometimes it’s healthy to cry it out, punch a wall or take some time alone to vent your frustration. After all, sometimes bad behavior is good when you need an outlet. It helps us get through it and remember not to let it get to us.

What we perceive as negative can sometimes lead to positive outcomes. The sooner we learn this, the better our chances of dealing with future problems will be.
