The three islands that were classified as protected under the Barcelona Convention were declared by the Council of Parliament in Lebanon as a nature reserve. The “Palm Islands” were called by this name due to the presence of a large palm tree on its lands, and 700 plantations of that palm were planted between the years 1997-2015. It was known in the past as “Rabbit Island” because large numbers of wild rabbits lived there, during a period of time. The French mandate in Lebanon, then the islanders began to move those rabbits to another safe place in order to preserve the threatened and rare plants there. The Palm Islands Reserve (or Palm Island as we call it), is 5.5 km from the coast of Tripoli and is located in the northwest of the city's sea. The reserve consists of three flat limestone rocky islands, which together with the surrounding waters form the “Palm Islands Nature Reserve”. These islands are: Palm Island, the largest of the three islands, with an area of ​​20 hectares. Its nature is flat without any terrain, with the highest point rising about 6 meters above sea level. Sanni Island is located southeast of Al Nakhl Island and covers an area of ​​4 hectares. Its nature is rocky, with a small sandy beach similar in nature to the sandy beach of Palm Island. Ramkin Island, the smallest of the three islands, covers an area of ​​1.6 hectares and is located northwest of Palm Island. Its nature is mostly rocky, with a maximum height of about 12 meters above sea level. It also has fresh drinking water, despite the fact that the island is in the middle of the sea. Al-Nakhl Island includes the ruins of a Crusader church built in the thirteenth century and the remains of traditional saltwaters and a fresh water well, while Al-Ramkeen Island contains a lighthouse (currently working on clean solar energy), trenches and ancient artillery positions dating back to the French Mandate period. Therefore, the islands constitute an attractive destination for tourists, whether to get to know them or for the purpose of swimming or diving.
