I would disagree with the time frame of 14 years since crypto was already being developed as early as the 90's though it toom until 2007 to get hit the mainstream. But overall his ideas and inputs are excellent, would definitely recommend his article.
That 14 years is just a number and he stated that it's for building a whole financial system (for changes) :) Even in the forums, most of the users/fanatic debate the exact year when crypto is created. But most of the users indicate or knew that bitcoin is the first crypto.
I think the first crypto title should fall to David Chaum's eCash,while Bitcoin is the first "decentralized" crypto. But since eCash wasn't successful, BTC could be considered the first in some sense.
Yes, some of the articles mentioned about David Chaum for his creation of ecash (encrypt information) however Chaums ecash they called it a digital currency or electronic cash. It will take time to all people recognized the first crypto and year created. I agree with you about BTC as first decentralized crypto :) There are also other early crypto like B-money and DashCash or HashCash (not sure the exact name) before BTC
