When you ask other nations to describe Filipinos, some words will be given are hospitable, resilient, friendly and happy. These are just some of the many good qualities that Filipinos have. But to be honest, we are just like any other nation too. Just like in batteries, we also have good and bad sides.
For this article, I will be sharing some of the toxic Filipino traits or cultures that I know. I will just be sharing my top five choices.
Let me start in...
Crab mentality
It is when you are not happy with the success of other people so you'll do anything to get in his way. This culture is not really helpful. Instead of just being happy for others' success, some Filipinos tend to do stupid things so that person will go down.
This is what insecurity can do. It can ruin someone's life.
Procrastinating
Sometimes referred to as Mañana Habit, it is the act of doing the things tomorrow which can be done today. One great example of this is a student has to submit a project on Friday, instead of starting doing it as early as Monday, he will postpone it and will just have to start and finish the project on Thursday or Friday morning.
Talking about laziness, this is the main reason why people tend to postpone their chores or deliverables. It is okay to be lazy sometimes, we all go through that. But being lazy always is and never will be a good thing.
Kids as Retirement Package
One of the worst cultures ever. I don't have anything against children wanting to help their parents or family to have a better life. But for parents to instill that their children should study and help them in the future is something we need to take a look at.
Children, Filipinos or not, should never become their parents' retirement plans. Remember that as parents we are obliged to provide them with all the things they need. We choose to have kids because we want to have kids not because we want them to be our golden ticket for a better future.
Filipino Time
Honestly, this is what I hate the most. When we say Filipino Time, it is somehow related to Procrastination where you delay or do something late. It is as if Filipino has their own time wherein they arrive minutes most of the time hours late than the scheduled time. Having this Filipino time can actually hinder someone's productivity and can question someone's punctuality.
A great example is if you are invited to a party at 8 PM, you will arrive an hour or hours late. Can we just be mindful of the time and be reasonable if ever we will be coming late.
Lack of Self-discipline
Laws are created to have a harmonious community. Every citizen should abide by it. But there are still a lot of Filipinos that neglect these laws. Lack of self-discipline may result in failure, loss of someone we love and other troubles.
But why do we do these? Because we want convenience. We sometimes break some laws and regulations to save time. Great example, if you are on the street and there is a signage that says 'No Jaywalking' but we continue to cross because it's easier than taking the long and high stairs.
Philippines is rich in cultures and traditions. Some are great and we can be proud of. But there are still that are not really helpful at all.
