It's possible that elves have families, but they don't have any of the broader social organizations that fairies in Europe do. Elves either live alone or in groups that are no larger than nuclear families. Fairies have courts, dances, and social ranks, but elves don't have any of these. The fairies live in the forest much like the elves do, but unlike the elves, they have royal families complete with kings, queens, princesses, nobles, and their ladies, as well as servants both male and female. There is no hierarchy or other form of social organization that can be found among elves. People living in rural areas of the Philippines appear to be unaware of who owns the fruit trees that they steal from along the roadside. They don't bother to obtain permission from the owner before helping themselves to the fruit on the trees as they walk by. But before they climb the trees, they take great precautions to petition the elves that are believed to live there to grant them permission. Trespassers on the property of elves are rumored to have skin rashes and lips that are permanently bent in addition to having their eyes filled with dust by the elves themselves. These ailments are cured by the traditional healer by scattering rice over the area that was trespassed upon and expressing contrition for the act of breaking the law.
