Heeeeyyyy When I was a child growing up in the 1990s, I remember hearing this song on the radio and mistaking it for a simple upbeat tune. Even when taking into account the fact that the song is about drug addiction, the words have an eerie quality that is heightened when they are given careful consideration. In this verse, he is reminiscing about his past relationship with a girl who is obviously also addicted to drugs. He is unable to differentiate the good times in his relationship from the times that he is high, and he is gradually coming to the realization that his entire relationship is predicated on his dependence on the drug. The chorus is a plea for him to get out of the situation, but he can't seem to stop himself from acting the way he is. Once you're in it as in actually listening to the lyrics, you realize how depraved the singer feels. I assume that the upbeat nature of the music is an attempt to replicate the feeling of being under the influence of a drug and the way in which it allures you to become a part of its world.
