First and Last Spank - A Father's Day Special

It was Father's Day yesterday and because I was busy with other stuff and there was a pending article that I needed to finish, I didn't get to publish a Father's Day special article. Seeing all these articles about Father's Day encouraged me to write something because my father deserves as well an appreciation post.

Papa is an Architect

I am blessed to have a father who worked hard to give us a better life, to send us to school without having to worry about our allowances or the tuition fees.

As he always tells us, when he was studying, he only had a pair of pants, he goes to the city even if he only had the bus fare, his father was a fisherman and his mother was the one who sells the catch, they'd send him his food supply via the bus so he could have something to eat, he worked his ass off at school, eating three times a day was already a luxury but he graduated nonetheless.

The greatest blessing he said that he couldn't forget was when he was about to take the board exam. They got no money, his parents were worried as they have nothing in their pockets. But a huge miracle happened. A day before his scheduled trip for his board exam, he went out to fish together with his father, and boy, they got a huge catch! Too many fish that their boat was about to sink!

He was still an unbeliever at that time and he said he thought it was just luck, now that he is a Christian, he believed that God did a miracle. He was able to go take the board exam and he passed it with a good score too!

Papa was a Government Employee

My father worked as a DPWH employee for a long time, I believe it was his first employer and he retired three years ago. It was a job which he loves the most and I never heard him complain about his line of work.

He led a group at the planning department, he was called the silent dove in the office as he was a very silent person, he works and would only talk when his colleagues would start talking to him.

He accepts scolding from the head and would take it to himself when there are mistakes made among his peers.

Outside of the office, his colleague friends would tell my mother about what had happened and they always would commend how my father would handle the situation. They said he is a very patient and humble employee.

Today, he works for his own business, he is now a contractor.

Papa Loves the Lord

I adored how my father is patient, he rarely scolds us, he would give pieces of advice and teachings but he gives the disciplining part to my mother, in fact, he only had spanked me one time and that was the last time too!

As we grow older, we find Papa as a silent type but he'd spill jokes when we are at the dining table during meals, he'd ask us about our studies and we would talk about everything under the sun.

Then I asked him how come he is a silent one, he answered me that he was not like that when he was younger, he was very much like the usual "kanto boy" or street boy we see in the neighborhood, he had a lot of friends whom he go out with to get drunk and smoke.

But when he was found by Christ and He accepted Jesus as his personal Lord and Saviour, he had a change of heart. He decided to turn away from his old self and so he began to develop a heart that is like that in the book of James, quick to listen and slow to speak.

Indeed, the fruit of the spirit can be found in him and that's why I look up to my father and I praise God for his life. He had shown us the Christian way of living.

Papa Loves Mama

"The most important thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother. " Theodore Hesburgh

I agree with this and we have seen it personally in the life of my father. We only had witnessed my father hurting our mother once and that was when he would still drink with his friends. When he became a Christian, he had turned away from that and we never saw him being a drunk or hurting mother.

My father loves our mother so much that he would do everything that my mother would request of him. When my mother is tired from her house chores, he would go and massage her, he would cook food for us, he would make coffee for mom every day.

Honestly, my mother is not the best, she nags a lot and she is very impatient but my father has been very patient with her. We have seen how my father treated our mother and that's the best thing indeed that he could do to us.

He is not the verbal type of father but he shows his love and sacrifices through his actions, I can say that his love language is service. He loves to do things for us, he cares for us, cooks for us even when we are already adults and we love his cooking.

Papa Loves His Children and Grandchildren

I remember hearing my father said he loves to have his children just living next to him. He wants to see his grandkids grow. He is already in his senior years and he wanted to be able to see them every day. This is one of the reasons as well that we decided to live in Bohol. We know that our parents are already advanced in their years so we hope that they can spend much time with their grandchildren as much as possible.

Happy Father's Day Papa! Thank you for everything, I love you!
